The quality of water is determined
by making measurements in the field or by taking samples
of water, suspended materials, bottom sediment, or biota
and sending them to a laboratory for physical, chemical,
and microbiological testing.
For instance, temperature, dissolved
oxygen, nitrogen, oil & grease, pH, oxygen demand, total
phosphorus, metals, conductivity, hardness, chlorides, chlorine,
toxic organic compounds, colour and taste are measured in
the field with portable equipment.
